Every spring we shear the alpacas and send some of their fiber to local mills to be processed into yarn. We occasionally blend the alpaca fiber with silk, bamboo, or tencel to create different characteristics.
Great joy comes from creating custom colors and hand dying, washing, winding, wrapping, and labeling each individual skein of yarn. We use a variety of natural and commercial dyes, and love the natural colors of the alpaca fiber too! Alpaca yarn is different from other protein fiber yarns. It does not have lanolin like wool, so it's hypoallergenic!
Alpaca yarn may be lightweight or heavy, based on how it was spun. When you crochet or knit with alpaca yarn, this fiber relaxes, and you shouldn't be surprised when you find that your project ends up a little longer or wider after some time. Alpaca yarn tends to “bloom” or develop a halo when it's been knitted and washed. It is an interesting property that sets it apart from most wool or synthetic fibers. |
